First Monday Fast FAQ

Who is this for?

When this began in 06, it was for anyone.  We have recently changed our focus to our youthworker leadership.  However, we would love for anyone to join us!

How do I get started?

Just email me (Lisle) if you are interested and I will send you a list of things to pray for before the first Monday.

Why fast?

Below are some phrases and thoughts that will help us remember why we fast as followers of Christ.

Fasting is Christian and is expected by those who are followers of Christ.  (Matthew 9:14-17)

Fasting defined “A Christian’s voluntary abstinence from food for spiritual purposes” (Donald Whitney).

Our fasting is about hungering more for the fullness of God and wanting more of Christ.

Fasting is simply feasting on Jesus.

We do not fast to get something from Him but to get more of Him – God is what we need and want not His gifts!

Fasting is not a no to the goodness of God or God’s provision, but a time to focus on the Giver rather than the gift.

Fasting reveals what controls us (Richard Foster).

We fast to. . .

  • Strengthen prayer

  • For humility

  • For God’s agenda

  • For strength in danger

  • For repentance from sin

  • For recognition of sin

  • Out of grief

  • Grow in Christ-likeness

Say we hunger for God more than His gifts.

What do you fast from?

In scripture when it refers to fasting it normally refers to fasting from food.  We recognize that fasting from food is impossible for some of you because of health concerns or your current physical activity.  Below, you will find some other ideas about what you can fast from so that you can still participate with us.

Types of fast (from Donald Whitney):

Normal – involves abstaining from all food but not from water.

Partial – limit on your diet but not abstention from all food.

Absolute – the avoidance of all food and liquid, even water.

What else can I fast from:

  • Internet

  • Cell phone

  • TV

  • Beauty (don’t wear make-up, etc.)

  • Music

Whatever you believe has a controlling factor in your life, this could be an element that you fast from.

Bottom line. . .

For our purposes, we will engage in the ‘normal fast’ – however, I would encourage you to start slow – maybe you just fast for one meal and then work your way to a whole day.  Remember the emphasis is not just on what your fasting from or the amount but the why – to hunger for more of God! So, we must replace the time we would be eating or whatever it is you are fasting from with time in the Word and prayer.
