Men's Ministry September 2007 Update

Men,

Men’s Ministry aims to help men to be godly agents of influence and encourage them as they strive to be the spiritual leaders in their families. We are currently building a base of active men through regular involvement in a variety of focused activities. Of course we’ll be having out monthly Breakfast and Bible Study this coming Saturday morning at 8 am in the Fellowship Hall. The next BIG men-only event after that is the Men’s Raft Trip. Over 20 guys have signed up to experience the ride of their lives in a couple of weeks. Other events, i.e., Times of Prayer, Bible Study, Service, Special Events, and Small Groups are planned throughout the year with the expectation that relationships will form that will help men to become stronger disciples of Jesus Christ.

If you made improving your Service to Others a priority for 2007, grab a buddy and …

- Consider helping prepare breakfast for this Saturday’s Men’s meeting and delivering food to needy folks in the LaGrange community. Come to the LBC Kitchen this Saturday, September 1st at 6:30 a.m. and see Johnny McRoberts. Then stick around for Breakfast, Bible Study and fellowship from 8-9 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall and hear an inspiring lesson from staff or elders.

- Be sure to bring your work gloves and willing spirit to help clean-up the pavilion in preparation for the Church-wide Fish Fry Social on Sunday afternoon, Sep 2 at 5 pm. See Alan Powell on Saturday in the “Back 40”.

--> Did you see the comprehensive list of Volunteer Service Opportunities in the bulletin a few weeks back? If not, check it out here. Perhaps God is leading you to new areas of service where he can use your gifts and talents to benefit others.

In His Service,

Tom

LIFE: Evangelism Training

What is L.I.F.E.? L.I.F.E. is an acronym for Love, Instruction, Fellowship, and Evangelism. These four words essentially form the basis of discipleship and when lived out practically in each of our age specific areas can help us to reach our mission of making disciples. L.I.F.E. is a year long (in four - two hour sessions) training program for Sunday School teachers to learn what it means to embrace L.I.F.E. and live out L.I.F.E together.

We are excited to continue this year's LIFE Training as we hear from Don Mathis on the topic of Evangelism. All Sunday School teachers (preschool - adult) are encouraged to come for a special time of fellowship and dinner together. Please sign up for this event in the foyer or online and join us September 9th at 5:00 PM.

Woman to Woman Mentoring Orientation Coffee

The Woman to Woman Mentoring Orientation Coffee will be Sunday afternoon, September 9th at 2:00 PM in Gloria McMillin's Sunday School Room (Room 127). The puprose of this meeting is to learn about the ministry and decide if you would like to be a part of WWMM. Women need women to talk to, learn from, encourage and care for them. That is what WWMM is all about. If you like to have a mentor, or are willing to be a mentor or a prayer warrior, please come to the Coffee or contact us.

Sin

Pastor Tony continues the series of Life Basics with a biblical and practical look at sin. If our perspective of God is in its proper proportion and our perspective of sin is in its proper perspective, only then can we recognize that we need to kill sin before it kills us.

For more information on killing sin, please see John Piper's 3 part series on "How to Kill Sin Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3." Pastor Tony and John Piper both reference John Owen's "Mortification of Sin In Believers". While written in 17th century English, John Owen provides an 86 page detailed analysis of Romans 8:13 that can best be summed up with the statement: "Be killing sin or it will be killing you."

Joy

Pastor Tony continues our series on Life Basics with taking a serious look at Joy. Focusing on John 15:1-11, we look at the source of our true joy and the thieves that would rob us of and roadblocks that would prevent us from experiencing true joy.

Suffering

Pastor Tony continues our new series on Life Basics with a tough, but honest look at suffering. Based on Job 1, we are challenged with some sobering thoughts, including:

  • the easier our life is on earth, the dimmer our view of heaven becomes
  • we need to fight and wrestle WITH God not against Him
  • most people do not die happily in their beds

In the end, we are reminded that God is God and that He is soveriegn.

L.I.F.E. Training Schedule 2007-2008

This year’s LIFE Training will be a continuation of what we have learned last year. We will continue to have these trainings be a way of growing us all in unity and maturity in Christ as we seek to lead and shepherd those under our care. LIFE Basics, which will come on the heels of these trainings (the following month), seeks to give an opportunity for the rest of the congregation to come and be exposed to our vision of LIFE and how we can practically be disciples of Christ.

The 2007 - 2008 schedule will be in reverse order with church wide LIFE Basics events interspersed throughout the schedule:
  • Evangelism: September 9, 2007 - Register Online Now!
  • LIFE Basics October 7, 2007
  • Fellowship: December 2, 2007
  • LIFE Basics January 13, 2008
  • Instruction March 2, 2008
  • LIFE Basics March 30, 2008
  • Love June 1, 2008

Children's Ministry Vision

We want to intentionally partner with parents in the process of raising their children to become followers of Jesus Christ by …

* preparing the soil of children’s hearts
* planting the seeds of biblical truth
* nurturing the saplings of faith

so that children might “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” ~ 2 Peter 3:18

Beth Moore Bible Study

A Woman's Heart: God's Dwelling Place.

Taken primarily from the Book of Exodus, A Woman’s Heart: God’s Dwelling Place by Beth Moore will take you on a fascinating journey into why God would chose to live in a wilderness tabernacle, made by human hands.

Taped in Beth’s home church in Houston, this updated edition of A Woman’s Heart contains all new video footage and exciting new graphics. Regardless of whether you studied Beth Moore’s first LifeWay study years ago, you’ll find A Woman’s Heart well worth another visit.

While the title is familiar, the content for this in-depth video teaching series is all new and rich in detail.

Registration begins August 12. The study begins August 30 from 7-9pm for evening and Friday, August 31 from 9:30-11:30 for morning classes.

We always need child care workers for morning classes. If you are interested in helping with childcare, please contact us.
