Route 56 Spaghetti and Service Night

Sunday, April 26, 2009 @ 5:30 PM

1 Timothy 4:12 says, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young.  But set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.”  It’s clear from Scripture that you don’t have to wait to do something great for the glory of God.  With that in mind, we are excited to invite you to the first Route 56 Spaghetti and Service Night.  Our 5th and 6th grade students will be working diligently to put together this entire night.  They’ll be serving together on various teams (promotion, kitchen, music, skit, and video) in preparation for this fun-filled evening in the Fellowship Hall.

Please mark your calendars and join us!

Parents!
We're excited about what's coming up the new year in Route 56!  Look for a more detailed calendar in the coming weeks, but for now here's a couple of important dates to make you aware of.

ROUTE 56 NIGHT
Sunday, April 26th, 5:30 - 7:30 PM
This will be a night to remember.  THe Route 56 kids will serve a spaghetti dinner and then put on the entire service that evening for everyone.  What a great way to culminate this year of learning and serving together.

Route 56 Retreat
Friday-Saturday, May 8-9 @ Cedarmore Camp
In the past we've done a 6th grade retreat and it was the kids' highlight of the year.  This year we're doing our first Route 56 (5th and 6th grade) Retreat and I'm sure it will be the highlight again of a great year together.  So mark your calendars and look for more information to come.

Route 56 Service Station #1

Hey parents!

We had a great time at Route 56 last night! Take a look at some of the pictures and read what the kids had to say about the night of serving together. [Don't forget to keep up with all the Route 56 events at the Route 56 Blog!]

Special thanks to all who helped make this night happen (Tracey Bruce and others) and to Jen McCubbin for writing down what the kids said after they served.

I’m praying with you that what your kids are learning now will be like a seed planted that will keep growing as they get older. The theme verse of Route 56 was lived out last night which says, “Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in your faith, love, and purity.”

Amen!

Partnering with you!
Doug Wolter

Route 56 October Events

Dear Parent,

It’s been a great first month of Route 56! And I’m looking forward to the month ahead. Take a look at what’s coming up:

Route 56 Bonfire – Friday, Oct. 3rd from 6:30 – 9:00 at the Church Pavilion
Hot dogs, S’mores, Games, and More! Don’t miss it!

Service Station #1 – Wednesday, Oct. 8th from 6:30 – 8:00 here at LBC
Our first service project! We’ll be cleaning the nursery and a few of the preschool rooms together. If you signed up for this service project please come and serve alongside us. And if you didn’t sign up, come anyway and be a part of the fun!

CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET? After we clean the nursery and parts of the preschool area, we would like to offer our Nursery Director, Penny Perkins, and our Preschool Director, Sue Bricken, a little surprise. We would like to give them a gift card and a thank-you from all of us for what they do for the children and families of our church. If you would like to contribute towards this gift for each of them (even if it’s just a $1) that would be great. Please give your contribution by Wed, October 1st.

Seven Project for 6th graders – On Oct. 15th, at South Oldham Middle School
If you have a child in 6th grade he or she is encouraged to go to this event. Talk to Pastor Lisle for more information @ 222-9306.

Note: We will still have Route 56 on this night for everyone who does not attend the event.

Fall Break – is Oct. 22nd so there will be no Route 56 on this night.

As we head into an exciting October, please feel free to call me or email me if you have any questions. My email is dwolter@lagrangebaptist.com.

You can also go to the Route 56 website: http://lagrangeroute56.wordpress.com/ for updated discussion questions and a hard copy of my message from each Wednesday night as well as pictures (I hope to put up soon). BTW … if you have a problem with putting your child’s picture on the website, please let me know. I will not put their names beside their pictures.

Looking forward to a great month ahead,

Pastor Doug

5 Recommended Christmas Books for Children

1. The Lightlings by R.C. Sproul **PERSONAL FAVORITE**
Not everyone is afraid of the dark. Some are afraid of the light. This is a great allegorical tale that weaves together the biblical story of redemption in a memorable way that will fascinate children of all ages. It also includes a discussion guide for parents with Scripture references in the back to get at the deeper meaning of the story. I highly recommend it.

2. One Wintry Night by Ruth Bell Graham
Through his death and resurrection, the baby born that night in Bethlehem had become Lord of all. This is the real meaning of Christmas, the joy and glory of it! As a little boy is caught alone in a snowstorm, he finds safety in an old cabin owned by a woman who cares for his badly swollen ankle as she tells him the Christmas story. In this unique version of the Christmas story, Ruth Graham tells the whole story behind the story starting with creation and concluding with the resurrection.

3. The Pine Tree Parable by Liz Curtis Higgs
After nurturing tiny seedlings into fragrant Christmas trees, a farmer begins selling them–all except the biggest one, which the farmer’s wife sets aside for her own family. But when a penniless young girl sets her sights on that magnificent tree, the farmer’s wife learns the true meaning of Christmas. After 10 years, this endearing parable has touched children everywhere! Recommended for ages 3 to 7.

4. The Legend of the Candy Cane by Lori Walburg
This is a timeless tale that will help families celebrate the mystery and the meaning of Christmas by looking at not just the candy cane, but the cross. Here’s one snippet: But Mr. Sonneman, what are the stripes for? Lucy asked. The man’s eyes grew sad. The prophet Isaiah said, ‘By his stripes we are healed.’ Before he died on the cross, Jesus was whipped. He bled terribly. The red reminds us of his suffering and his blood.

5. Christmas Carols for a Kid’s Heart by Bobbie Wolgemuth and Joni Erickson Tada
No other time of the year is filled with as much excitement and gleeful expectancy as Christmas, and no one seems to enjoy the season more than children. Christmas is a time of making memories. And musical memories are one of the most precious gifts we can give the children we love. Along with many stories from the Bible, there are devotionals as well as a CD of songs included.

Operation Christmas Child

Christmas will be here before you know it. And you can have an opportunity to make a world of difference. Every year our AWANA program participates in Operation Christmas Child, the unique project of Samaritan's Purse that shares God's love with millions of hurting children all over the globe. We invite you and your family to join us as we take an ordinary shoebox filled with toys and other presents and turn it into a great opportunity to tell children about the greatest gift of all - Jesus.

Brochures are available in the foyer and more information is available online. Please read these materials closely. They give instructions on how to pack your shoebox and what to include and not include. DON'T FORGET to enclose a $7 check in the envelope attached to the brochure payable to Samaritan's Purse with a note in the memo line that the gift is for Operation Christmas Child. If you are unable to afford the $7 check or fill an entire shoebox, we still encourage you to participate in bringing in whatever you can and we will supply the rest. PLEASE RETURN YOUR FINISHED SHOEBOX TO THE TABLE OUTSIDE THE CHURCH OFFICE NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 14TH.

We are excited to spread the love of Jesus with you. Take this opportunity with your family to make one small shoebox that promises to make a big difference in the life of a little child this Christmas season.

Blessings to you and your family,
Children's Pastor
