FAQ DiscipleNow 2009

What is DisicpleNow?

The DiscipleNow concept centers on a small group atmosphere in a home setting for a weekend. Each group will have six to ten youth of the same sex and will be led by an adult leader. Each group goes through a specific Bible Study that introduces some to what it means to be a Christian and encourages others in their growth as a Christian.

Where do students stay?
Students stay in church members homes throughout the county.

Are adults staying in homes?
Yes, the group leader, host family, and usually another adult worker stay in the homes with the students.

Who are the group leaders?
Usually, group leaders are members of our church or personal friends of Lisle. You can call Lisle to find out what adult will be leading your student.

What does the cost cover?
It covers food, materials and t-shirt. Your student will not need any extra money for the weekend.

When will I know where my student will be staying?
We assign host homes with groups the first part of November. We do not make this public info until the Friday night of the event. If you need to know where your student is staying, just call Lisle.

What if my student has a conflict in schedule during the weekend?
That is one of the beauties of this event – it is done in town. So if your student has a conflict and it cannot be changed, in your registration confirmation packet there will be a “time away” card – fill it out and give it to Lisle before the weekend. But, understand, we strongly encourage you to try and work it out to be there the entire time.

A Healthy Church Member is an Expositional Listener – Part One

Deacons, Over the next few weeks I will be sharing some insights from our study of the book “What is a Healthy Church Member” by Thabiti Anyabwile. Our study this past Sunday focused on the idea that a healthy church member is an expositional listener. One of the first things we must do is define some terms.

Two important definitions:

"Expositional preaching is that preaching that takes for the main point of the sermon the point of a particular passage of scripture." pg 19

An important note to make is that expositional preaching is not providing a running verse by verse commentary of a passage. Doing so produces a commentary not a sermon. It is an important work, but it is not preaching.

"Expositional listing is listening for the meaning of a passage of scripture and accepting that meaning as the main idea to be grasped for our personal and corporate lives as Christians." pg 20

Here we need to note that as we practice expositional listening we are doing just that, we are listening. However, we are doing more than just listening, we are accepting. We are accepting the meaning of the passage.

As we think about listening for and accepting the meaning of the passage we also need to think about why we need this message. It is vital to a healthy church that we ‘grasp’ the message individually and as a body. There are many benefits in expositional listening for us as individuals and as a church. Next time I will highlight some of those benefits.

Blessings, Mark

Welcome Benjamin Brainard

Yesterday, November 8, 2009 our congregation voted to call Benjamin and he has accepted the position of Worship Pastor.

Benjamin was born in Bowling Green, KY but grew up most of his life outside of Cleveland, Ohio. By God’s grace, he was blessed with Christian parents who were faithful to take him to church whenever the doors were open. Benjamin was saved at a young age, and was actively involved in church, but it was not until college that he was able to follow Christ apart from his family. This was a time of great growth and rejoicing in the gospel which led to the desire to be a full-time minister of the gospel. Benjamin graduated from Western Kentucky University in 2004 with a degree in Music Education and in 2005 moved with his new wife, Amanda, to Louisville to start seminary.

In December of 2008, both Ben and Amanda graduated from Southern Seminary with Masters of Divinity, his being focused in the area of missions and church growth.

Ben and Amanda welcomed their first child, Eleanor into the world March 2009!

Please join us in welcoming our new Worship Pastor, Benjamin Brainard.

Adoption

On this Adoption Sunday, Pastor Tony takes us to Romans 3:9-26, Galatians 4:3, and Romans 8:12-23 to meditate on what it means for all believers to be adopted by God.

Preparing to Grow Together

Deacons, this Sunday will be the second meeting of the new deacon calendar year. We are working to make these meetings helpful to you so that your time invested will be to your benefit and that of the church. To that end we are planning to have some time dedicated to our spiritual growth. We are going to begin by looking at biblical principles of church membership, “what is it, what does it look like”. I will begin by walking us through a short book called "What is a Healthy Church Member?" by Thabiti M. Anyabwile (I won’t try to pronounce that name for you).

As you prepare your hearts for this study and for our meeting together this Sunday, I would like for you to consider a couple of statements from the book.

  • "…the Lord’s intent is that you play an active and vital part in his body, the local church" (pg.14).

Please note, he is talking to every church member. As deacons and leaders in the church, this cannot be understated. God intends for you as deacons to play a very active and vital part in his body. Our intention together should be to encourage each other to do just that, capitalizing on our God given gifts and passions, while supporting the overriding mission of the church.

  • "The health of the local church depends on the willingness of its members to inspect their hearts, correct their thinking, and apply their hands to the work of ministry" (pg 15).

This will be one of the very things we will try to do together throughout the coming year. I look forward to serving you this year in an effort to help you express your faith in God through vital ministry to His church.

God bless, Mark
