The Blessing and Burden of the Bible

Pastor Tony starts a new series on The Purposes of God by looking at both the Blessing and the Burden of the Bible to the Christian. He calls our attention to the fact that then entire Bible is designed to point to Christ: the Old Testament looks Messianically foward (toward the Messiah) and the New Testament look Missionally forward (from Christ out to the world in missioins).

Pastor Tony uses multiple passages of scripture, including Luke 24:25-26, 44-48 and Genesis 12:2 to point us to the Blessing (the Gospel) and the burden (Missions) of the Bible.

Depression and the Christian

Pastor Tony completes our series on LIFE Basics by taking a serious look at depression, specifically with how depression can and does effect Christians. Using Psalm 88 as our guide and referencing Charles Spurgeon‘s The Treasury of David, Pastor Tony shows a Biblical guide to experiencing and expressing depression.
This is an excellent resource not only for those who suffer with depression, but also for those who know, love, live with, work with, or counsel those who suffer with depression.

How Do I Know I Am A Christian?

Pastor Tony resumes our series on Life Basics with helping us to understand, based on Romans 3:21-25 and 2 Peter 1:5-11, that it is not important if we can remember the point in time we committed our lives to Christ – what date/time, what prayer was said, what isle was walked, or what committment card was filled out. Our faith does not rest on any of these experiences of salvation. Our faith rests 2000 years ago on the work of God of Christ on the cross. We cannot look to anything that we have done to know our salvation – we must look outside of ourselves to Christ and His perfect work completed on the cross. Only then can we rest in His Grace and Grow in Christ.

The Devil and his deeds

The latest in our series on Life Basics, Pastor Tony walks us through 1 Peter 5:6-9 for a biblical view on Satan, who he is, the names he is known by, and how we are to live our lives – not in fear, but humbly dressed in the armor of God, standing firm in our faith and the knowledge that we cannot hope to defeat Satan on our own – but Jesus can (and already has!)!

Sin

Pastor Tony continues the series of Life Basics with a biblical and practical look at sin. If our perspective of God is in its proper proportion and our perspective of sin is in its proper perspective, only then can we recognize that we need to kill sin before it kills us.
For more information on killing sin, please see John Piper‘s 3 part series on “How to Kill Sin Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.” Pastor Tony and John Piper both reference John Owen‘s “Mortification of Sin In Believers“. While written in 17th century English, John Owen provides an 86 page detailed analysis of Romans 8:13 that can best be summed up with the statement: “Be killing sin or it will be killing you.”

Suffering

Pastor Tony continues our new series on Life Basics with a tough, but honest look at suffering. Based on Job 1, we are challenged with some sobering thoughts, including:

  • the easier our life is on earth, the dimmer our view of heaven becomes
  • we need to fight and wrestle WITH God not against Him
  • most people do not die happily in their beds

In the end, we are reminded that God is God and that He is soveriegn.
